FAQ’s – Year 4 Eleven Plus Booster

1. When can my child start?

You can start at any time of the academic year and your child(ren) will make progress.  However, to get the most out of the booster classes we recommend starting at the beginning of the academic year.

2. Does my child have to start eleven plus preparation in year 4, can they not start in year 5?

The eleven plus entrance examinations normally take place in September in the first 2 weeks of year 6. This means that a candidate should start preparing ideally no later than the beginning of year 5. It is not essential to start preparing in year 4, our year 5 eleven plus booster classes cover all the relevant material for the entrance examinations. However, from our experience the strongest candidates more often than not are the ones that have been preparing from year 4 onwards. Many students starting in year 5 struggle on some of foundational concepts that are taught in year 4.

3. What year groups are the booster classes for?

The year 4 11+ booster groups after the Easter holidays are only for children in year 4. Prior to this their maybe a mix of children from year 3 and 4. However most of the time our classes are specific to a particular year group.

4. How long are the booster classes?

Our year 4 eleven plus booster classes are 2 hours and 10 minutes long. Children have a one hour of English / verbal reasoning lesson, then a 10-minute break followed by a second hour maths / non verbal reasoning lesson.

5. How many children are there in the booster classes?

In our booster classes, we ensure an average of 8 children per tutor, with a maximum of 9 students to 1 tutor. These classes are specifically designed for children in the same year group, offering highly targeted and focused tutoring.

6. How will you teach my child(ren)?

Children learn in various ways whether they it be visual, auditory, reading / writing or kinesthetic. All our tutors are very experienced with teaching children using various methods to ensure they understand what is being taught. Eleven plus tutors give lots of examples whether it be using the whiteboard, discussing verbally or demonstrating practically.

7. Will my child(ren) receive homework?

Yes. Children are given homework on a weekly basis (except for assessment weeks).  All homework is based on what a child has learnt in the lesson and is designed to reinforce their learning. Ones returned, homework is marked and explained with further examples.

8. How much homework will my child(ren) receive?

Homework will vary on a week by week basis. Unlike our English and Maths booster classes, Our eleven plus courses do require considerably more homework to be completed.  This starts off slow in year 4 and builds up considerably in year 5.

9. Will I be informed regularly of my child(ren)s progress?

Yes, all our children have weekly progress reports which will let you know how they did in their classwork, homework and including work ethic. Tutors and parents can also write comments within the weekly reports which make them a great way of ensuring regular communication between your child(ren)s tutor and yourself.

10. What qualifications and experience do the tutors have?

All our eleven plus tutors are fully qualified teachers with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).  In addition to this our eleven plus tutors have specialist knowledge , experience and skills around delivering content relevant to the eleven plus entrance examinations.

FAQ’s – Year 5 Eleven Plus Booster

1. When can my child start?

You can start at any time of the academic year and your child(ren) will make progress.  However, we strongly recommended that year 5 students start lessons from September in year 5.  The year 5 11+ is an extremely intense programme of study and as a result we the earlier a child start  as the programme of study is pretty intense.

2. What year groups are the booster classes for?

The year 5 11+ booster groups are only for children in year 5.

3. How many hours is the year 5 11+ booster?

Our year 5 eleven plus booster classes are 4 hours weekly. children study for 2:10 minutes on the weekend, this is the main class. They then study an additional 2:10 minutes on one of the weekday evenings, this is a revision class.  Children study English, verbal reasoning, maths and non verbal reasoning lesson.

4. Does my child have to attend the revision class during the week?

We strongly recommend they attend as it is a part of the course and they will be missing out on a complete programme of study.

5. How many children are there in the booster classes and revision classes?

In our booster classes, we ensure an average of 8 children per tutor, with a maximum of 9 students to 1 tutor. These classes are specifically designed for children in the same year group, offering highly targeted and focused tutoring.

FAQ’s – 1-2-1 Tuition

Our 1-2-1 lessons are hourly and we recommend at least 1 hour a week for year 4 children and ideally 2 hours a week for year 5 children.

3. How many children are there in the lesson?

There will be one tutor dedicated to one students during all 1-2-1 tutoring sessions making them an extremely targeted form of learning support.

4. What will my child be taught?

Children are taught English, Maths, verbal reasoning and non verbal reasoning in line with the structure followed for the CEM Durham University eleven plus entrance examinations. A list of some of the topics covered can be found at the top of this page.

1. When can my child start?

FAQ’s – Intensive Revision & Mock Exams

1. When can we get 1. Are these revision and mock sessions suitable for the 11+ examination my child will be taking? ?

Our revision courses and mock exams are geared towards 11+ examination papers that are produced by the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring at Durham University. Commonly referred to as CEM. Local grammar school from Walsall/Wolverhampton/Birmingham and Warwickshire as well as grammar schools in Gloucestershire use entrance examination papers produced by CEM.

2. How many children are there in the revision classes and mock analysis sessions?

We have children from across the Midlands attending these courses.  Every year is different, however on overage we have approximately a ratio of 10 students to one of our 11+ specialists for revision classes and analysis sessions.

3. What will my child be taught?

Depending on the days you pick or if you choose to book the whole programme, your children are taught English, Maths, verbal reasoning and non verbal reasoning in line with the structure followed for the CEM Durham University eleven plus entrance examinations.

5. How do I know if my child is suitable for the revision classes and mock exams?

If your child is sitting an eleven plus exam in September then these revision courses help prepare them for these exams. However not all children are suitable for the eleven plus entrance examinations. A general rule is that your child should already be achieving above average at his/her school. In addition to this we are happy for you to come in for a free consultation and assessment to gage suitability. Please contact us to arrange.

6. Will I be informed regularly of my child's progress and achievement?

Yes, you will have an opportunity to speak to the tutors at the end of the day to get some verbal feedback on how your child has performed during the revision sessions and mock analysis sessions. All mock exam results are shared with parents via a report at the end of the course.

7. Will my child receive work to take home?

Children are given revision booklets after attending the intensive revision sessions to further help them revise and prepare for the actual 11+ examinations. Mock examination papers cannot be taken away, however tutors will highlight areas a child needs to work on after papers have been marked and analysed.

9. Can I get help with the fees?

Diya got a high score in the 11+ entrance exams after attending Cohort Tuition, and we are confident that she will get a place in our preferred Grammar School. The Cohort Tuition holiday Revision & Mock classes were very useful and Diya was able to consolidate her knowledge. The staff are friendly and approachable. There are regular tests and updates. We are continuing to send Diya to Cohort Tuition for year 6 and she will also be attending from year 7 onwards. The class sizes are small and there is a review after every class which is recorded in a booklet that children take home to show parents.
